This book has been on my TBR shelf for a couple of years now. I spotted it in Barnes & Noble on a recent trip, and my boyfriend picked it up and asked if I had read it. I told him no and that it was on my TBR list, but that I wanted to read it next. Feeling pretty proud of checking another book off my long TBR list!
I'm Glad My Mom Died was a wild roller coaster of a book. Jennette's childhood and her depictions of difficult topics such as abuse, eating disorders, mental health issues, and addiction were tackled with wit, bravery, and naked honesty. I felt Jennette's pain, even if I couldn't completely relate to it.
What makes this book so powerful is the redemptive ending. She broke the cycle of her toxic habits, quit a career that she found oppressive, and took the reins in her life. Knowing that she is thriving today is bittersweet.
On a personal note, I lost my own mother in 2016 at the age of 52. Our relationship was never perfect, but it was never abusive or neglectful. Jennette made me feel an even deeper appreciation of my mom, our bond, and how I've navigated my grief over the years.
Books that make me feel strong emotions always go straight to the top. If there's a little humor to offset the heartbreak, it's an automatic 5-star rating. I loved, loved, loved this book!
